Articles on: ✅ Merchant Acceptance

Can you guarantee Halocard will work for my purchases?

Halocard are virtual credit cards issued by Visa and accepted at over 175 million merchants globally, for both USD and non-USD purchases.

While **we cannot guarantee acceptance at any specific merchant **(no card company can), we always recommend opening a Halocard account and testing whether our virtual cards work for your unique situation. As long as the merchant isn't classified as high-risk by Visa, acceptance is generally very good.

Please be aware there may scenarios that affect whether a merchant accepts US-issued credit cards for your purchases.

Why would a Merchant decline my purchase?

Merchants set their own account and regional-level rules that can either block payments before they reach our card network, or accept and instantly refund payments. These merchant-side rules are something Halocard cannot control. Common reasons for this include:

  • Geographic restrictions (e.g. Attempting to purchase US-only services when you're outside the US)
  • One-card-per-account or per-deal policies (e.g. Attempting to use multiple cards for promotions limited to one customer and one card)
  • Merchant-side fraud and risk scoring on your account profile (e.g. Attempting to use a service in a way not permitted by their terms of use)

If a merchant is either:

  1. Declining your Halocard immediately at checkout and before it reaches our card network, or
  2. Immediately refunding purchases back to your Halocard,

They're restricting your payments based on your profile or account activity. This means they are likely not willing to accept a Halocard, or any US-issued credit card, being used with your account. This is unfortunately outside of Halocard's control. You should contact the merchant and seek clarification as to why they're not accepting a perfectly functioning Visa credit card issued in your name.

How can I prevent a Merchant from declining my purchase?

  1. Open a Halocard account and test with a small purchase to confirm acceptance.
  2. Set a custom name and billing address on your Halocard that matches the details the merchant on your account. See: How to set a custom billing address on Halocard
  3. Ensure your account and usage of a merchant's services is in accordance with their terms of use.
